Matt,Personally I think that you are throwing away your time and money to do anything less than have a reputable transmission person pull the pan and inspect the transmission. (Stay away from name brand transmission shops-find a local shop). Your car MAY only need some adjustments/fluid/filter (a transmission tune up) but from what you were describing it sounds to me that you are just a few blocks drive from transmission failure and a complete rebuild. The last time I had a "tune up" done it was about $100, less than what your Rayco guy wants just for fluid! I had the tranny on my '65 rebuilt last year for $500. Someone on this list who knows more than I already told you that your rebuild should be about $500. Do you really want to chance having to shell out $500 on top of $120 plus your time and effort for the filter and gasket?
A fluid flush is a great idea for general maintenance (IE nothing is wrong) but you need more than that if it is slipping, burning, and dripping! I must say however, I am not a mechanic. I am just someone who has been driving for 26 years.
Yes there is a lot to be said for doing it yourself, however working on a transmission with problems is not exactly a good place to start.

Ok, so i think the nice guy at Rayco Car Service talked me into getting the tranny completely flushed. It seems like a good idea to completely flush out the old fluid, and put in nice fresh fluid, instead of a mixture of the two. He tells me that if i just want it flushed it's 120 dollars, so what i might do is go ahead and replace the gasket and filter by myself, and then have the shop flush it for me with their machine.Thoughts? ----------------- http://www.imperialclub.com ----------------- This message was sent to you by the Imperial Mailing List.
