Here is a conversion factor I worked out shortly after Canada decided to go 
metric.It is extremely simple and involves remembering only one number for 
each type of gallon used.
1. For those individuals who wish to convert using the imperial gallon the 
number is 284. So if you are getting 20 miles per imperial gallon you divide 
20 into 284 and come up with 14.2 as the answer. This means you are using 
14.2 litres per 100 kilometres. If you wish to convert from litres per 100 
kilometres to miles per imperial gallon you divide that number into the same 
284. So if you are using 10 litres/100 kilometres you are getting 28.4 miles 
per gallon. Try it and you will see that it works. Also please note that I 
am not trying to take the answer to 5 decimal places.
2. For those who wish to convert using the U.S. gallon the number to 
remember is 237.
