I own a '56 Imperial Sedan and one of the first
things I needed to replace were the four bushings that keep that LONG
driveshaft (imagine a center bearing vulcanized mount to boot and have
re-done!!!) in place by those rear stabilizers. I had suspected due to the
weight of the vehicle and the monstrous power provided, that these were to
prevent the rear axle from literally rolling as the power was transferred.
