Welcome, Jeff.
It's easy to fall in love with the first Imperial you see for sale. There are quite a few of us '66 owners who can help you if you take the plunge.
When it comes to '66s, engines are engines and sheetmetal is sheetmetal. The first thing to check is whether the interior and exterior trim are in good condition. They only made 2300 or so coupes, and spare parts unique to that model are a b!tch to find. Chrome window and door trim inside and out, door panels, side glass, sail panels, scuff plates all need to be in good or restorable (how much $$ do you want to spend?) condition.
Look for cool options like full leather interior, auto pilot, tilt/telescope steering wheel, AM/FM with reverb and foot seek button, auto headlight dimmer and power vent windows. Check the condition of the wood trim on the dash and doors. That's
140-year-old walnut and is not available for love or money. If the dash pad is cracked, it's $1000 to replace. Carpet can be replaced, but the material available is not nearly as good as the original.
If this car is not the one but you want to keep looking, it's good to know what to look for.
Happy motoring,
David
