First suspect is the starter solenoid, but don't overlook a shorted wire or even the ignition switch (the place where the key goes, in yesterday's world). When you turn the key to "Start", 2 things (in particular) happen: 12 volts is fed directly to the points, bypassing the ballast resistor, and 12V is sent to one of those "little" pins on the solenoid, saying "Fire this baby up!" That results in the solenoid points closing inside, effectively connecting the 2 large wires together. They are held together until you release the switch. If they continue to hold together, then either they are starting to stick from use over time, the starter's pulling more amperage than normal, causing them to "weld" together (check for the starter, check for a short to ground in the cable between the solenoid and the starter, check for a short in the wire sending 12V from the ignition switch to the solenoid. A short to positive in that wire somewhere would cause the solenoid to continue to stay engaged after you had released the key. So if it were mine, I'd do a perfunctory underhood wiring inspection and then throw a new solenoid at it because they aren't all that expensive, do fail, and are readily available. ANYTHING to help a '62 Convertible owner. What a beautiful car! --Brooks in Dallas '61 custom '63 convertible -----Original Message----- From: mailing-list-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:mailing-list-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Lambda Imperial63 Sent: Tuesday, August 15, 2006 9:15 PM To: mailing-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: IML: 62 not cranking ??? I started up my 62 Imperial Crown convertible last Sunday, and when it started the starter kept running. So, I clicked the key on and off a few times, and after a few trys, the started dis-engaged and all was OK. Pulled in out of the garage, turned it off. A little later took the car out to dinner. Had dinner, started fine after dinner. Drove back home, about 15 minutes., backed it into the garage, Turned it off. Then tried to start again and nothing happened. The red light, oil pressure, came on, and the guages worked, but not even a grunt from the starter. Is the solenoid fried? Any ideas - suggestions? thanks, Bob 62 & 63 Imperials _________________________________________________________________ Don’t just search. Find.
