Re: IML: Info on '81 EFI IMPERIAL

My 1964 imperial lebaron had a similar problem. It would start and run for about 5 seconds. My mechanic drained the gas tank and cleaned out a lot of dirt. The car has been running great since. Good Luck! Frank....... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave" <Wilkerbeast01@xxxxxxxxxxx>

The info on this car is, that I reinstalled the air cleaner, the car
would just crank. I took the air cleaner lid off, poured a little
gas down the throttle plates, put lid back on, car started, ran for a
second, and died. So it seems the problem is lack of fuel. Any and all suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

(This car is still EFI, folks. I invited Ryan to join us here,
where more
people are available to help.

I know he has been working on it, and has made some measurements etc.
but
I'd like him to start over from the beginning so everyone knows the
background.)

Please, to start with, undo anything you've done to it such as
bypassing the
ASDM, taking the lid off, etc.

Now, please tell us more about what it does: Does it start and then
immediately stall, or does it not even start for a second?
If it starts and stalls, check to make sure that the air cleaner lid
is on
tightly, and that the gaskets and clamp are all in good shape. (Even
a tiny
air leak will confuse the computer in these cars, and when it gets
confused,
it always does the same thing - shuts it down, right NOW!)

If it does not even start for a second, loosen the wing nut in the
center of
the air cleaner temporarily, put 2 ounces of gas in the depression
and allow
it to run down the screw threads into the intake, then tighten the
wing nut
again. The car should start now, at least for a second or two. If it
does,
we know your problem is lack of fuel. If it doesn't, we know your
problem
is ignition related. If it starts and keeps running, the problem is
in the
initial purge cycle, which is a whole new subject; we need to cut
down the
number of things we have to talk about here.

Do those things and get back to us, there are people here who want to
help
you, but they need information to go on - there are thousands of
possibilities - we need to narrow them down.

Self-Introduction: My father-in-law bought an Imperial for my wife
when
she graduated High School. It had 14,000 miles and was in mint
condition.
After driving it for the summer, it started to die while driving
and leave
you stranded. It was parked for 12 years, now I have it in my shop,
trying
to get it reliable again. It currently has 36,000 miles.
