I saw advertised for $29 a device which plugs into the cigarette lighter, accepts any thumb drive and transmits the music on the thumb drive to the FM frequency of your choice. No need to buy an IPOD and get stuck with Apple restrictions. I recently purchased a 256 Mb thumb drive for $15 and the prices are lower now. This all assumes that you have a good working FM stereo. Also, the sound transmitted through the FM band will not be as good as having a hard wired CD. Much lower dynamic range and greater distortion and hiss which you may notice in a car as exceptionally quiet as many Imperials are.
If you want good quality sound and do not want to hack up your dash, some form of a self contained system in the trunk is the best way to go. This stealth approach also reduces the danger from criminals as long as you do not boom in the wrong places and even if the system is stolen, the interior of the car probably will not be touched.
There are too many options which is good and bad. Choose wisely.

How to make music fit in your Imperial ... or anything else.
Awhile back I bought an MP3-capable CD player for my '65 as I felt it would look right with the rest of the dash --- and one of it's 7 colors is purple ... http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/discave_1903_42562056
I never did get it installed but, have since, bought an iPod .... Now all I need is a working radio and working cigarette lighter and I broadcast MY music over any available FM frequency. No need for anything fancy, I've used it in a U-Haul truck.
Now all I need is to find is a suitable FM radio that fits rather than cut the dash to make one fit.
By the way, the only reason the lighter is needed is (with iCarPlay) to power the transmitter or (with Airplay) just so you don't run down the iPod battery.

Mount the changer in the trunk. Put in a couple of speakers in the rear shelf and a sub woofer if you need in the trunk. You would not have to make any modifications to the car. All that you would have to do is run a power cable to the trunk and run the wired remote to somewhere near the driver. If you do this, make sure the power cable is fused near the battery.

I usually remove the box from the glove
compartment, and hide the stereo in there.
If there are speaker cut-outs under the
parcel shelf, you can always mount the
spoeakers invisibly under there. If not, and
for the fronts, there are a lot of small
one-channel surface mount speakers out there
today that a car-stereo shop should be able to
wire up into a surround-type system while
keeping them inobvious.
