The hissing sound is more than likely a vacuum leak in the brake booster. You can figure that one out by installing a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold and seeing what it does when you apply the brakes.
On my 62, it's a Kelsey Hayes type booster, and it was one of those items that had to be shipped, rebuilt, and shipped back. Not too many people have these things in stock. I hate to say this on the eve of a cross country run, but that's the way it goes with our rare cars. The master cylinder is probably fine, but why risk it when you can buy a beautiful brand new unit (not refurbished) from Kanter.

The backup lights are controlled by a switch that is in the transmission. I believe Andy Berbaum has this part.
