I have removed the old faulty regulator from my temperature gauge (1960 Imperial) and replaced it by a modern solid state regulator. I have used the LT1083CP-5, it delivers a rock steady 5 Volts at 8 Amp. max. So it has enough reserve to operate the 3 gauges that need the 5 Volts. In fact, 5 Volt was a little too low, so I added a silicon diode in the ground wire of the regulator. The output is now 5.6 Volt which is perfect for my gauges!
