Import duties. The bodies for the Turbine cars were built by Ghia in Italy. The duties on 50 vritually hand-built cars would have come to a pretty penny. Thus the government permitted Chrysler to pay duty only on the units they kept. Chrysler did not have to pay duty on the cars they destoyed.
