IML: Sending Unit '55 Gas gage

Two years ago I bought a NOS unit for over $100 and it lasted one year. I have been told two things about this sending unit which I would like to have confirmed (or rebutted):

1) The pollution additives in the gas, here in Louisville, is what killed my sending unit. Since then I buy my gas in the next county to avoid these additives, this no big deal as I live only 2 miles from the county line and polluting gas.

2) I can obtain a more generic Mopar unit for about $20? Anyone know what to buy and where?
