RE: IML: Lifter collapse - 1955

Hi list,
I have a 55.  For the most part the car is totally trouble free.  when it sets during the winter in storage, I start it every three months.  It will make the same sound of the lifter.  I let it warm up to operation temp and it goes away.  when you drive the car it stops making the noise all together.  The next winter it does the same thing.  I have owned the car for 4 years now and it aways does this.

If it is just one it could be just a bad lifter. I would try a stethoscope
to try and narrow it down as far as location. I would then pull that side
valve cover off and check for proper lifter preload as well as possible
incorrect valve stem height. You never know with an engine that has an
unknown history. Just look for a valve stem that is sitting higher or lower
than the rest. It happens whether from a bad seat or a wrong valve
installed.
