RE: IML: Rust Removal was Glass Polish

I use a molasses bath for my rust removal. It is very cheap, will not
attack anything but rust, and very, VERY, sloooowwww, especially in cold
weather. You might almost say "slow as molasses in January".

But it does work well. Go to your friendly local horse feed place, get a 5
gallon bucket of "Blackstrap Molasses" for under $10, pour it into a 55
gallon drum if you are going to use it on large parts, and mix in water to a
9 to 1 consistency. It takes a couple of weeks to strip a really badly
rusted piece, but it comes out like brand new metal, and with no damage to
anything else. It will work faster if you wire brush off the easily removed
rust, leaving less for the molasses to work on. Molasses is a chelating
agent (meaning it absorbs oxides), not an acid or a caustic.

Acid stripping also attacks many other materials, I don't recommend it. Lye
stripping will also strip the paint, which you may or may not want.

"There is no doubt that vinegar will strip rust, I have used it for many
years in that fashion. If you want to strip fast, muriatic acid works good
as well, it strips rust in minutes instead of days. One thing that I have
not tried is striping rust electrolytically using a lye solution and a DC
current. Apparently this will strip rust from folded joints as well as
stripping paint and grease."

I have heard of vinegar and the lye/battery charger rust removals. I have a

how-to write-up from the MML if anybody is interested. Somebody on the MML
is using a molasses bath. Anybody on here every hear of this?
