Thanks for everyone's input. I'm still waiting to see whether the
original that has been offered to me is fully functional or not. In
answer to Chris' question, my car has a very plain toggle switch on
the lower dash panel, just above my left knee. It's unlabeled and
somewhat out of character with the rest of the car however a friend
with a near perfect '56 4dr Southampton has the same setup (an his
actually works!).

Not a clue, I was just taking a wild guess on the switch since the
ealry 60's models have one next to the map light switch. On the 56's
