I don't believe for a second that Iacocca would have killed the Imperial if
he'd have gotten to Chrysler sooner. He's a salesman. I remember his
interviews about the need for a luxury niche vehicle. I think he was just
distancing himself from the perceived failure. If they'd have sold hundreds
of thousands of 80's Imperials and 2,000 K cars he'd have said that he
wanted to kill the K car, but got to Chrysler too late.
IIRC, the statement about if they had "all sold" came from the fact that the
'81 was supposed to be a "limited" edition and production was going to be
limited to about 25,000. They only sold eight thousand and change in 1981
and then another few thousand over the next two years. You'd better believe
that if they sold 25,000 Imperials Iacocca would have been taking credit for
his bold vision.
I'm not sure about the fuel injection badges. My '82 has it, my '83 no
longer has the fuel injection and the badges were shaved before I bought it.
