Don..
I should have been more specific, Ive never found brushes worn beyond the
half way point, and I dont recall if I was clear on that or not. The
residue does indeed get everywhere though. The commutator..the copper
gizmo...should be cleaned out between each commutator bar, and I should have
mentioned that, I slipped past it no doubt because its basic motor 101 care
and feeding. As far as ball point springs and such for the brush springs,
certainly. Ive had enough junk motors around to never need to scrounge for
them. Ive swapped bits from motor to motor, and even swapped commutator
end plates, but its just easier to take the best parts available and go from
there.
The driver I use is just a ....12" , maybe longer, fine slotted screwdriver.
I end up holding the end plate and commutator just so in one hand and
alternating with the driver from side to side to get the brushes up and over
the commutator end. It looks just as goofy to do it that way, Im sure my
kids would have plently of snide remarks as well but they tend to shy away
when Im in the garage due to flare ups in my vocabulary.
No problem on the Norelco reference, surprisingly the need for asbestos
underwear, bunched or not, has been very light from that. You know,
sometimes you just have to stop smelling the roses , and have a good laugh.
