Saturday I went to the annual Mermaid Parade in beautiful Coney Island, USA.
"The day when Brooklynites can show the qualities they are known for
-being shy, introverted and polite to others." Before the actual parade
begins (think drunk, naked men and women spray painted silver, sometimes
with seashell brassieres, sometimes without, and huge paper mache floats)
the trot the classic cars out. This year there was a nice '67 LeBaron. I
didn't get a chance to speak with the owner, so I'm not sure if it's anyone
on the list. It had a leather interior and looked basically like a nice
original. Not perfect, but the only thing you might have marked it down for
was the dual exhaust sticking past the bumper. At the grandstand the emcee
said something to the effect of "Ah, the regal Imperial, finally a vehicle
worthy of carrying Marty Markowitz [Brooklyn Borough President] on the
parade route!" A nice enough statement but particularly after about 10 show
quality Caddies had already paraded by.
