Re: IML: rear wheel bearings

Most, if not all, of the 8 3/4 rear axles used a very common bearing, the Bower BCA number was A-7, which was the basic bearing for either side. Sometimes you will find a A-7 RK or A-7 LK, which denoted the left or right sides, as one side has the threaded adjuster for setting the end play.

Theres no magic to these, no special tooling required. If in doubt, you can use a dial indicator on the axle flange to see how far out of round or bent things are, but thats not the usual case. Normally you chisel or cut or even torch off the retainer and then press off the bearing. I prefer a cut off wheel or chisel, but a chisel can slip and hit the axle and a torch can get things pretty hot if youre not diligent. You dont have to cut all the way thru the retainer, get close to being all the way thru it and usually you can pop it right off of the axle.

As far as reinstalling, put the parts on in the right order...Ive seen them on backwards before, been there done that in the heat of the moment! It really sucks to press on the bearing and then see the little flange that bolts to the axle housing sitting on the bench. Then just press it on all the way to its stop or shoulder, nothin to it.
