Thanks for the offer but it turns out I was wrong to be targeting the resistor for replacement.   I had simply assumed that if the coil was on its way out, the resistor might be as well and my initial resistance readings seemed to indicate an open circuit.   That obviously isn't the case as the car has been starting and running reasonably well all along.

This afternoon I did the long awaited tune-up - plugs, wires, points, cap, rotor, and failing coil.   I was quite impressed with myself - I was able to gap the points in about five minutes and the car started in less than two seconds on the first turn of the key.   A bit more power than before and much smoother.   Smooth enough, in fact that I didn't even bother hooking up the timing light!

Auto Zone in Ca has them for about 3.00 ea. They are not NOS or =
anything but they work. Let me know if you cant find any and I will run =
over and get a couple for you and mail them to you.
