I keep going through cars, and keep throwing starter motors at them. They all seem to age poorly. New ones sound tight and fast - old ones loose and metallically rattly. If you crank and it seems slow and the engine is cold, you can reach down and tap the body of the starter motor with your finger. The last car I got was cranking so slowly that it wasn't catching, but wanted to. the starter motor was so hot I burned my finger, so I gave up on it. It was drawing so much current that it was heating like crazy. If you need to replace, ask the parts guy for the correct starter motor (62-72 Chrysler/Imperial 440), and then ask for a starter out of a 1994/96 Dodge Dakota V8. Supposedly a better, smaller, lighter motor and impressive in its difference. Also more expensive, but I was tempted last time. You might also think one step ahead and remove your starter to take in to avoid the core charge and to compare to ensure you're getting the right part. -K --- jsadowski <jsadowski@xxxxxxx> wrote: > Now that the emissions testing for collector cars > has been dropped here, I > decided to do the carburater swap on my 69 so I can > register it.
