Re: IML: Its Alive: Or Was 69 IMP

I love carb work. It's one of the best things you can do for your car.

There is a slim possibility that your newly installed carb has allowed
gasoline to pour into the cylinders (which does not compress), preventing
combustion and giving your starter fits.

Remove one or more spark plugs and check the electrodes. You can skip
number 8 if it's just too much of a pain. Fouled? Smell like gas?

More likely, it's the starter or the associated wiring. Check the battery
first. Put a tester across the battery poles and make sure it's above 12
volts. Not 12 volts? Then you have a charging system problem or you need
a new battery.

Clean the posts and the inside of the terminals. Do not reattach yet.
Trace the battery negative post to ground wire and clean the other end.
Trace the wire from the battery positive post to the firewall and clean the
other end of that. Then clean the positive and ground contacts on the
starter. Now reattach good and tight. Do you have 12 volts at the
starter?

If it still goes rrrrr...rrrrr...rrrrr then you probably need a new
starter.

Happy motoring,

David

Now that the emissions testing for collector cars has been dropped here, I
decided to do the carburater swap on my 69 so I can register it. It took me

all of 2 hours to do the whole thing & when the car started up, it ran
beautifully & probably smoother then it ever did the whole 10 or so years
I've had it. I even had the A/C on & let the car run for about 45 minutes &

moved it forward & back a few times.

After I shut it off, it refuses to restart now. The tone of the
starter is a little strange sounding & barely turns the engine, even with
the good battery from my 60 in it. I havn't had the chance to try again
after the car fully cools down. I'm wondering if the erratic tone of the
starter means its bad or do you think something else is wrong here?
