It sounds like your are confirming what I have understood all along. That is that no one ever learned how to fix an Imperial by dreaming it up in their head. It came from hard work, lots of reading, and practical experience. The best mechanics that I know of are the ones who admit to their mistakes. Having an open mind, and staying teachable is a big plus.

I wouldn't suggest that just anyone can become an ace mechanic. I think that requires apptitude and skill, but anyone here can become a good enough mechanic (by intensely studying the FSM) to prevent being ripped off by dishonest repair shops, and to understand the basics of how to keep their Imperial running dependably and well. Having an Imperial (or any old car), and being on some kind of a budget, makes at least this much ability practically a necessity.
