California engine changes (was Re: IML: 80-83 imperial question.)

So don't tell CA DMV that you put in a 360!!!!!!!

Well, Davis, of course you're right. But you have to say your prayers to
the Mopar gods that the smog tech doesn't know s**t from Shinola. That's
one of the reasons there is a factory sticker for the carb conversion --
the emissions standards are different for the non-EFI engine. Now, if you
tucked a 360 underneath the EFI with stock valve covers you would surely
pass the visual inspection. I doubt they will look at block castings or
stampings, and they likely couldn't tell one small block Mopar from another
by sight. But if their book says "fuel injection" and you don't have it,
oh oh... And if you ever get nailed, they'll impound your car and there is
no limit (literally!) to the amount of money you can be forced to spend to
pass CA smog with that vehicle for the rest of its roadworthy life.

Please note all of the above only applies to conventional registration. If
you want to go the "historic vehicle" route and adhere to the limitations
within reason, that's another option.

See you in San Rafael, I hope.
