Octane is a measurement of a fuel's ability to resist exploding (Detonation). If fuel explodes instead of burning evenly, it will eventually destroy valves and break pistons. lead increased octane (slowed flame propagation) thus reducing detonation. The lead also lubricated the valve seats a small bit, but I think the past 30 years have shown that unleaded fuel doesn't really destroy valves like it was once believed to. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

    Detonation, no.   I can tell you that I have had zero issues with running 87 octane as long as I add the Lucas.  The way it was explained to me, and keep in mind I am not a mechanic, is this.  High octane does not lubricate the upper cylinders, rods, or lifters,  thats what lead in the gas was for.  The reason we run high octane is because is somewhat of a substitute for the lead not being there but in time it will still burn out the valves.  Lucas is not a lead substitute but lubricates the valves better than lead did.  That is why I have never needed a valve job, I don't run high octane.

And you can burn the cheaper (assuming 87 octane regular) in it without detonation?  Or did I misunderstand what you meant by "lowest cost gas"?
