Octane is a measurement of
a fuel's ability to resist exploding (Detonation). If fuel explodes instead of
burning evenly, it will eventually destroy valves and break pistons. lead
increased octane (slowed flame propagation) thus reducing detonation. The lead
also lubricated the valve seats a small bit, but I think the past 30 years have
shown that unleaded fuel doesn't really destroy valves like it was once believed
to. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...
