RE: IML: 80-83 imperial question.

Hey, Brandy --

The California DMV will not look kindly upon your replacing a 318 with a
360. Your car is not smog exempt, so you have to go through a whole
rigamarole of notifying them of the engine change, if the engine is newer
than the car then you have to meet that engine year's emissions standards,
and in no case can you put in an engine that has lower emissions standards
than the original engine.

Conversion is well documented on the club web site, but the parts for the
"factory" conversion are not all available and it's EXPENSIVE. That's why
there are so many hack jobs out there.

I have had an '82 Imperial (Frank Sinatra edition) for some time. It
had the original EFI, but nevertheless performed well until the end,
when it kept stalling. However, at that point, it had a couple of
hundred thousand miles on it, so I cannot complain. I would really
like to put a 360/727 in it. Can you explain what is entailed in doing
so? Has anyone put together a conversion kit? I am particularly
interested in clearances (e.g. exhaust manifolds), motor mounts,
radiator, wiring, etc. Thanks in advance for your help.

Where are you located? The last thing I need is another one, but....
doesn't mean I wouldn't want a peek. 81-83 are basically
indistinguishable.
There were some very minor trim differences (chrome around headlights,

more detached pillows on the seats) and I believe the radio options
changed,
but otherwise everything should be the same. I don't think you'd have
to
sell a clean trans am to get one. They generally don't have the
greatest
resale value. I have seen several for under $1000. A nice one won't
set
you back more than $2,500- 3,000.

The main thing to look for is to see if it has been converted from efi.
If
it hasn't how well does it run? If it has, was it a factory job or a
backyard hack job? Be somewhat leery of any non-factory conversion, but
I
have had one for five years with a 360 4bbl and 727 trans and it has no
issues with the conversion other than a LOUD fuel pump and a fuel gauge
that
reads full for half a tank and then drops twice as fast as it speeds
toward
empty.
