Re: IML: Need help with my '55 air cleaner

You could try filling it water, floating the solvent out, but be prepared to reclaim the nasty polluted water.

Subject: IML: Need help with my '55 air cleaner

Hi all-

I am having some difficulty figuring out the air cleaner on my ?55 sedan.  I took it off yesterday and cleaned it thoroughly in a parts washer in preparation for painting.  Now I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get the extra solvent out of the ?sump? part of the air cleaner.  I have two questions:

  1. How does one empty the sump completely?  The repair manual suggest replacing the oil in the sump every 1,000 miles.  How is this done?
  2. Has anyone ever converted their oil bath air filter over to a modern paper type?  I would be interested in this.  Any and all suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance for the help!  Have a good Sunday.
