In pointing to the list of online articles, I forgot
to point out this one in particular.  I think it to be
one of the best general histories that I've seen so
far.  

It is long enough to pass for a book, and in fact was
included in a hardbound "magazine" published quarterly
on exquisite paper with very high production
standards:
