The '57 and '58 headliners are not made of fabric and there are no bows to hold it up. They are a heavy fiber/paper board held up by the garnish moldings and two chromed plastic strips running front to back. If you paint it, be careful of the type of paint you use. A latex that is too 'wet' may cause it to delaminate. A chemical based paint may soak in and not color properly. It should be sealed with a sealing agent like shellac or something similar before painting. Test on a spare one or a hidden/back area first.
