For more information, please visit www.oklatravelnet.com or contact Jennifer McLaughlin at 918-582-6200 HISTORY OF THE BURIED CAR In 1957, a new gold and white Plymouth Belvedere was buried with other historical artifacts in a time capsule on the lawn of the Tulsa County Courthouse to commemorate Oklahoma's 50 years of statehood. On June 15, 2007, the historic Belvedere will be unearthed and on display for the public at the Tulsa Convention Center as a part of Oklahoma's Centennial celebration. In 1957, citizens of Tulsa were asked to guess what the population of Tulsa would be in the year 2007. The entries were sealed and buried inside the vault with the Belvedere. When the car and artifacts are excavated, the person whose guess is closest to Tulsa's 2007 population or their closest identifiable heir will be awarded the Belvedere. Among other items buried with the car, the contents of a women's purse, including bobby pins, a bottle of tranquilizers, cigarettes and an unpaid parking ticket, were added to the glove compartment of the car shortly before burial.
