John Teske is right, you should buy one of Tom van Beek's sending 
units.  Comes with excellent wiring diagram, instructions, and theory 
of operation.  All for only $175.

Can't tell you if the head will fit in your '57's dash.  But Tom's 
sending unit will fit your distributor.  You should send Tom the head 
so he can make a harness that will work and repair the tach head if 
it needs work.
