I am in the process of converting my 56 Dodge over to Power Steering. I have acquired all the parts and pieces needed. My first phase was to build the mounting brackets for a Saginaw Pump. Next to build up the pump. I installed a 2 GPM Mustang II Flow Valve #910-32918. I installed a Borgeson Pressure Relief Kit using 5 Shims and hoped their calculations were correct.

I have 2 complete Coaxial Steering gears from 2 different sources. One came from a very nice fellow in New York and I found one in Casa Grande AZ. I bought everything from Steering Wheel to the Pitman Arm from AZ. I had emptied the old oil out of each and hand pumped them full of clean oil for storing. The last while I have cleaned each unit up, installed new seals and O rings that I thought could be ready for replacement just in case.

I had an old 8 HP gas engine that I converted into a pump test unit. Perfect as Idle is 600 RPM and Max is 2400 RPM. Made up hoses, dug out old fittings , etc. and coupled it all together.

Today with all hoses connected to Pump and the NY Steering unit I fired up the engine. I had to keep topping up the pump reservoir as the steering gear filled. Rotating the Steering Shaft in both directions it felt good until I stopped turning but the steering shaft would creep to the left. Back and forth hoping for different results, No Luck. ^&*%$. To adjust this out of the gear you need a Special Tool #C-3445 which I do not have. This was a shop tool. I f anyone knows where one is, who might have one I would really like the dimensions so I can make one.

I disconnect the NY unit and coupled up the AZ unit. The same process of filling the reservoir and then rotating the Steering Shaft. Yahoo! Nice and smooth and stopped when I stopped turning. I still have a bit of work to do, like draining the Top housing and filling with 10nces of new oil.

I will allow myself 3 days to remove the manual steering and install the nice new easy to turn a corner power steering.

Del S

I would really like to find someone with the C-3445 Tool.

Great work there Del. Good thing you grabbed that AZ unit when you were down there. Charlie didn't know whether his unit worked or not or whether it needed adjustment.

There are some clues as to what a C-3445 should look like starting on pg 63 of this 65 page compendium pdf from Mike McCandless's shop:

Also some info in this pdf:

Thanks Dave. I have that Service Bulletin but there is not a lot of info on the C3445. I have determined the diameter of the rod is 1/4" and the length is about 14". Now what I need to figure out is how wide is the slot that goes over the Adjuster end. I could take the upper housing off OR contact Mccandless. I'll figure it out.
