Hi all -

Is there a rebuild kit or someone who rebuilds these?

Just had my engine and trans resealed, water pump rebuild, etc, etc, and now I have about 4 small leaks from the Power Steering Box and can't seem to find anything.

There aren't that many opportunities for leaks on those old coaxial steering gear boxes:

1. The high pressure (800 psi) input hose and fitting
2. The lower pressure return line and fitting
3. The input shaft seal
4. The Pitman arm output shaft seal.

Many local rebuilders can rebuild them. I don't know where they get their parts from. Or you can take it to any local Napa and they will send it out to one of their rebuilders.

I am just working on my 56 Coaxial Steering Unit. As 56 D500 has stated there are not many places they can leak from. I am on my way out, when back later I will post the seal points and seal numbers, etc.

Back on the program...

There is a difference between a Leak and a Weep in these steering gear.

Weep...There is a vent hole on the upper half of the gear that exits near the seam where the two parts bolt together. If the upper half has been over filled or oil from the lower half is getting into the upper half it will exit through the vent. There is a 1/8" NPT plug in the upper half that takes a 3/16 Allen wrench to remove. The upper half if empty has a maximum capacity of 10 OZ.
Possibly oil may weep at the seem between the 2 halves of the steering gear. This would require taking the gear out of the car but simply cleaning it occasionally works.

Leak...The two most likely are,
1) the output shaft, Photo 297. This seal is a CR12350 or a National 474278. This one can be removed by removing the pitman arm and then the retaining ring. Then with the engine running (needs 2 people at this point) hold a container over the output shaft and have the other person turn the steering wheel slowly to one side against the stop. Be ready to shut the engine off as it will pop the seal out along with a bunch of fluid. Make yourself a driver to install the new seal.

2) The Chrysler steering unit has 3 bolts holding the cap (#75) in the above exploded view. You can refer to the Field Service Manual for the procedure for replacing this gasket (#74). You may have to make this gasket, easy.
