Dear Members,

I am in the process of replacing the compressor on my '61 Imperial. The original compressor began to lock up, literally moments after my thinking how beautifully it was cooling this summer! I have a good used compressor that still has some mineral oil in it which I want to flush out because I converted my system over to 134 some years ago. Is it sufficient to drain out the old mineral oil as well as possible, or do I need to try to flush the compressor in some way? In other cars when I installed a used compressor, I have just drained out the old oil and filled the sump with 134 compatible oil.

As an aside, I am also wondering if the original compressor can be rebuilt, if I can determine what's failed. Thanks!

Does the compressor lock up permanently or will it turn after sitting a while? If the lockup is temporary, don't blame the compressor...it's probably the refrigerant charge that's causing it to lock up. Try bleeding off some of the refrigerant.

"How Inaccurate Refrigerant Charges Can Lead to A/C Compressor Lock-Up.

Even a slight deviation in refrigerant charge levels can cause severe damage to your A/C compressor. Modern A/C systems—especially those using R-134a and R-1234yf refrigerants—require precise charging within ±5% of OEM recommendations. SAE J2788 mandates an accuracy level of ±0.5 oz."
