      Location: Netherlands | Anyone know if some company ever made proper fitting passenger car headers for those with Plymouth/Dodges with engine swapped 331/354/392 Hemi's?
Tried some Googling for it but came up dry.
Just tried to install a 392 Hemi in a '58 Plymouth with block hugger exhausts, but because of their straight down exits right near the oil pan, they end up hitting the torsion bar anchor and part of the lower control arms. Also the angle the exhaust tube has to make to clear the steering linkage is impossible, unless you run it under the linkage, where the tubes are very prone to being smashed up.
The current available shorty/hugger headers are lousy designed and only suitable for hotrods it seems.
Pretty much looks like starting from scratch and built your own set is the way go unfortunatly.

That's exactly why I made my own long headers for my '56 Savoy. I originally modified a set of shorties to make them work in there, but I was forced to route the exhaust under the steering. I got tired of that very quickly. But on a '57-'58 car, the easiest solution is to run 4 bolt truck exhaust manifolds with 2.5" outlets. Those flow very well and I run them on all my '57-'58 hemi cars. You might have to lift the engine *slightly* to get a little better clearance, but otherwise they fit without too much trouble.
If you do decide to build your own headers, I started with a set of cheap shorties, and cut them up to get the flange with the pipes already attached. These all use 1 7/8" tubes. I also purchased a good set of big block chevy headers for a '57 Chevy because they use the same 1 7/8" tubes and it provided me with a lot of different bends that I could modify and put them where I wanted them - along with the collectors that I needed. If you purchase bent tubes & collectors separately, you'll spend a lot more on that than just buying the headers, so that was a good way to go.

I made a set of headers once for a '64 NY where I used the flanges of a B-body header and a mispresented header set from Summit, which turned out to be ment for a motorhome.
The 392 I have came with its original cast iron manifolds but I hoped for some extra ponies with a shorty's I also got with the car.
I still have a box full of stainless steel bends I could use to fab something up, but this will be a job when I bring the car to my garage which has a carlift.
