Expert Posts: 1368 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | I replaced the water pump and the new pump had the wrong size threaded opening for the bypass fitting[3/4" threaded opening] so I plugged the hose & water pump and drove to get an adapter for the 1/2" nipple[3/4 x 1/2 bushing]. The car heated up in a 1/3 the time it normally took and I had heat by 2 miles as compared to several miles with the hose installed. The temp shot up to hot and I guess when the thermostat opened, it dropped back down. To me, that seems like what a car should do anyway? I don't understand what it does or is supposed to do?

However, there are two small diameter hoses that go to/from the heater core with flow in them controlled by the heater valve. A 56 Dodge V8 water manifold and water pump showing the two heater hoses. If your's is different, I apologize. ![]() Close up of the two heater hoses at the location of the thermostat housing on the water manifold: A better photo of the heater hoses at the thermostat housing Heater hoses at the heater core and heater valve: Edited by 56D500boy 2024-12-10 7:18 PM

Correct. On engines without an external bypass hose, a small hole below the thermostat is the bypass. The external hose is usually found when the thermostat is in the intake manifold...not the block or pump housing.

I think my non-bypass 56 Dodge water pump, which has the thermostat in the water manifold, uses a thermostat with a tiny hole in the plate. I learn something new every day. ![]()

Expert Posts: 1368 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Alright, that make sense. I don't recall any bypass hoses like that on any other makes I've owned. Usually 1 hose off the pump to the heater an the heater returned to the intake. Hopefully it's not something that will damage the motor. I need to drive 10 miles to HOME DEPOT and back for a fitting. No other vehicle. It heats up right away. Almost to the top and then opening it drops down to almost 3/4. Little hotter at intersections and lower on the highway. A little warmer than usual but I guess the thermostat on it's own doesn't provide the best flow on it's own?
