When I turn the blower motor on high it makes a lot of noise so it obviously needs some WD-40 or something similar under the dash somewhere. Is there a simple way to lubricate it without disassembling anything? If so, where? I didn't see anything in the factory shop manual that covers this. Thanks....

The 55 and 56 models used two HVAC motors, one for heat and one for defrost.

The heater motor is accessed from the engine bay. Two wires (power and ground) and three bolts.

The defroster motor is accessed from the passenger foot well. Same deal.

You could try removing each one and, after removing the squirrel cage fan, getting some oil (3 in One/Sewing machine oil) down the shaft.

Probably bronze bushings that were never designed to last almost 70 years.

I removed the 3 bolts from the fan on the firewall but it wouldn't come out so I sprayed a lot of WD-40 all over it. I spent about half an hour trying to put the bolts back in but it wouldn't line up with the holes correctly. I gave up because my back was killing me and was going to try again today but it was 18 degrees this morning so I'm going to wait until it warms up a little. Do you have any idea why the bolt holes won't line up with each other?

Normally, I don't think there is any sealant between the fan plate and the fiberglass heater plenum. Somebody, in their "wisdom", in the past, might have used caulking or silicone to seal the fan plate
to the plenum. I am guessing that the fan assembly will come away with a strenuous tug, maybe with the assistance of a putty knife first slipped between the plate and the plenum to break the
seal between the caulking/silicone and the plenum.

As for the bolts not lining up, the bolts go into "speed nut"/clips that are a bit loose on the fiberglass plenum. If you can get one started, then a small screw driver or awl can be used to align the other
two. Don't tighten any of them until you have all three at least started.

Here is my 56 Dodge (same as a 55 in this case) after I removed my fan motor during a heater core replacement. I think you can see the speed nut/clips quite clearly ?

Somebody up there must like me. I went back out into the garage around 2 in bright sunshine which had warmed up the garage some. This time I removed the air cleaner so I could approach it from the front instead of over the right fender. I had all three bolts nice and tight in a few minutes so I got in and turned on the fan without starting the engine and I could hardly hear it running. Then I turned on the defroster, which I hadn't used before, and it was really quiet too. So I started the engine and let the car idle in the driveway with the fan on high for a few minutes and it remained very quiet so I must have hit the right spot when I was spraying the WD-40 in there. Now I can continue to use it as my daily driver this winter when the roads are clean and dry without all that extra noise. Thanks again for your help....

For future reference, this is what I hoped that you would be able to do: Remove the heater fan and then the squirrel cage impeller, in order to get some oil down
into the bronze bushing the motor:
