Have a 56 desoto firedome wagon. Intermittently the battery "dies". I was driving it the other day and it ran fine, but them drove it at night with the lights on for a bit. Car would not start this am, battery was dead.

I charged the battery and put a meter on it with the car at idle, had just over 13 volts from the generator to the VR, and from the VR to the battery. When I turn the lights on (car is idling) I get 13+ from the gen to the VR, but just over 12 volts (12.5) from the VR to the battery. So it appears the battery is not charging with the lights on. Any thoughts?

Based on my recent and similar experience, you need to replace your current battery. That solved my 56 Dodge's starting problems.

(The battery would take a charge but it wouldn't keep it - any kind of load killed it quickly)

I believe that you would need a Group 27 (?) battery.

Good luck
