| I am contemplating purchasing a new water pump for my 315V8 1956 Dodge Custom Royal. I am trying to be cautious. A lot of water pumps advertised list to cover the 4.4L motor, not the 5.1L. ie. they list for the 1955 V8, but not the 1956 V8. Are they different? My parts books seems to list #1643290. My pump has casting no #1637750
Does anyone recommend Auto Parts Obsolete as a reputable dealer, as they list a new one of these for my engine which I am considering purchasing. Thanks for any opinions.

Location: So. Cal | Yes, the '56-'58 high deck water pump is different than the low deck '53-'55 water pump.
Take Ed's advice and get your original rebuilt by a local rebuilder, NAPA store, or the link he shared.

Steve failed to mention that he is in Australia so getting a very rare 56 Dodge (in Aussieland) water pump rebuilt locally is not going to be his solution.
Steve: You are correct, 1643 290 is the 1956 315 poly (and D500 hemi) water pump PN. The other one for the smaller (low deck) 270 Coronet motor (4.4L) looks the same but it is much smaller.
Wrong for you. You need 1643 290. They are out there.
*IF* you were able to score a 1643 292 water pump repair kit rebuild kit, there are procedures.

| Ok, Thanks everybody. Forgot to mention I'm in Australia, and not familiar with the differences mentioned above. I've gone ahead and bought a complete pump #1643290 for US$89, which I think is OK value compared to some prices I see on the Internet.
Lets hope it was a good decision. I appreciate everyone's responses . Steve |
