Veteran Posts: 100 Location: North Germany | I tried to pull out the taillights at my 1961 NY to get them new colour. I removed all small screws in the trunk ( maybe 70% are missing ) but the whole lighthousing won't move an inch. I suspect somebody has but some glue oder putty on the gasket. But before I apply too much force (and destroy something), I wanted to ask if I've missed something? Thanks Roger Edited by Zorc 2024-01-27 3:54 PM

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10192 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . From what I can see (but I might be blind), the taillight housing is normally held into the body via about eight (8) 10-24 threaded studs screwed into the pot-metal housing and nuts that areadded once the housing is installed into the body. Based on the fact that some of the studs are slotted at their ends for a flat blade screw driver, there is a possibility that some of the studs might have to be removed to allow the housing to swing out of the body once the nuts have been removed. There also seems to be two tabs on the inner end of the housing that fit under the horizontal stainless trim pieces. All that and somebody might have used glue or silicone caulking to seal the housing to the body. Gentle slow prying from the outer corner giving the glue or caulking a bit of time to stretch and yield might be the trick. ??? Veteran Posts: 100 Location: North Germany | Hello Dave, thanks for your reply and the pictures. I can see from the pictures that there is really nothing there except the screws. So I took all the screws out and pressed very lightly, a little more , a lot more - it came out In fact, someone has put some glue on all the connecting surfaces. I think it's because most of the screws are missing, I suspect the threads are damaged. I will replace them and put everything back together. My red glass is almost colorless. I will try to spray it with a special color ( transparent red ). Hopefully it will work. Thank you Roger

Veteran Posts: 100 Location: North Germany | I removed and cleaned the rear light lenses to prepare them for painting. I noticed that there is a film on the inside. The plastic film is colored red - is the plastic perhaps not colored and the "red" only comes from the film? I'm afraid to remove the film so I'm going to paint it. It will only be a thin layer. I've never seen anything like it. Roger (taill.jpg) (folie.jpg) Attachments ---------------- taill.jpg (30KB - 59 downloads) folie.jpg (25KB - 66 downloads)

Veteran Posts: 100 Location: North Germany | My rear lights are painted and back in the car. And Dave was right: the stud bolts have to be removed. Due to the curvature, the three individual parts cannot be fitted with the screws screwed in. And most of the bolts also have to be removed when inserting them into the car - I was able to leave the two inner ones in. But now it looks good.
