The motivation for this is two fold:

1. To find out what the rear springs on a 56 D500-1 were really like and find someone who could build new ones (mostly for Gary R. who has a D500-1 under restoration)
2. To find out who could make clones of the original early civilian 56 D500 (also P29 56 Fury) rear springs (maybe for me)

This has lead me to investigate the Spring Research Institute and Stengel Bros. who have some data and then correlate that data with the 55-58 Mopar Parts book if/when possible.

There are still gaps. I am still hoping for more input from Forward Look forum members who I have contacted, hoping for photos and measurements. The information is not all in yet but I need to consolidate what I have before my brain explodes (messy that).

Here is what I have put together so far. Feel free to proof read and/or suggest corrections.

FYI, I believe that no one will make springs with the original groove down the middle of them. If you are looking for that kind of originality, you will have to re-curve/revitalize some originals.

The other day I found a bunch of springs being sold on eBay by McVeigh's Spring. I found a phone number (outside of eBay) and phoned to talk with somebody. The owner, Tom McVeigh was out so I emailed a list of spring SRI numbers that I hoped that he might have (or could make).

The next day, while I waited for Tom's reply, I remembered that I had seen a Dayton Parts logo in some of his eBay photos. So I contacted Dayton directly and ended up talking to a Jordon in Technical. I threw a few numbers at Jordon that we would like but he kept answering that those had been superceded to the SRI 33-315 which is a 6 leaf spring but only 760 lb capacity. BUT the killer was they (Dayton) aren't really set up to make that spring anymore.

So I threw one more number at Jordon: 78-431 a 6 leaf but with 880 lb capacity. He replied that, yes, they could make that one. There is an issue with one of the bushing ends but they can deal with it and the OE attachment bolts will still work. I said "that sounded interesting. Is it stocked? What about pricing?" . He said that it would be a 12 to 16 week out special order and that I would have to contact a dealer (they don't sell directly to the public) for pricing. I said "like McVeigh's?" and he said "Yes".

So I called McVeigh's and spoke with Tom McVeigh and went through the short story about talking to Jordon at Dayton and that the 78-431 might be available. Tom said that he would contact Dayton and find out more about timing and pricing. He asked for my phone number and said that he would call when he had info.

While I waited for that reply (with pricing), I called Eaton Detroit (Eaton Springs, in Detroit) and spoke with a "William". We discussed a 1636 877 Mopar number as being an SRI 78-431 which then translates to their ML 7883, an 880 lb capacity 6 leaf spring (the wagon spring). Their price is US$335 per spring (plus shipping at about US$160 to the west coast). So probably more than Dayton but no mention (and I didn't ask) about timing. Didn't seem to be an issue. (Maybe)

After I got off the phone with Eaton, I got into their website and investigated a bunch of 56 Dodge spring options for Coronets and Custom Royals. I think I did 6 configurations, each came back with one standard and one heavy duty option. The highest capacity was a 7 leaf 1000 lb heavy duty wagon spring, their no. ML 1817. Pricing got worse: US$375 per spring (US$750/pair plus shipping). If you are interested you can place an order directly with William at Eaton.

I have consolidated the Eaton info into the table below, just so I don't lose it.

If you want to play with the Eaton website yourself, follow this link:

https://www.eatondetroitspring.com/make/dodge/

About then, Tom McVeigh called me back. He says that because he normally buys springs from Dayton in batches of 12 pairs, he gets good pricing from them. That said, he was embarrassed (his words) to give me the pricing on the SRI 78-431, 55-56 6 leaf 880 lb wagon springs at US$489/pr. Shipping to me on the west coast he though would be about US$60 with UPS. Terrible(ish) compared to his eBay pricing of common springs of about US$335/pair plus shipping. BUT the springs would be 12 to 16 weeks out (as Jordon at Dayton had told me), once they are ordered (they have to stop production of something and re-jig and therefore there is time and cost involved above the normal production runs).

So Dayton is expensive but not as bad as Eaton. But Eaton has a 7 leaf 1000 lb Heavy Duty spring that Dayton doesn't seem to have. (??)

Personally, I don't think I need a 1000 lb capacity spring. 880 maybe (my stockers are probably 720).

Per E. was nice enough to email me photos of the rear springs on a 56 Custom Royal Lancer that he is working on. 5 leaves. PN 1636 859 (Photo of the numbers is much better than the one I took of mine)

He also sent a photo of the 7 leaf rear springs on his 56 Custom Royal convertible. So far he has not been able to get to a position that he can photo the PN on the spring. The height of the stack is about 48 mm which is a bit more than I would expect from 7 x 0.25" x 25.4 mm/inch (= 44.45 mm). But is close to the 1 13/16" (=46.04 mm) of a 1635 602 "heavy duty" 55-56 7 leaf spring in the chart above. Hopefully he will eventually be able find the PN on the spring(s) and post it up.

The 6 leaf wagon springs that I have on one of my '56 Furys is 1636877. The original '56 Fury springs that I took off were 1675690 and were made to ride lower than I like.

I am still hoping for an actual 56 Dodge Coronet 6 cylinder owner posting a photo of his/her 4 leaf rear springs, likely PN 1635 585.

In the meantime, I found this 56 Plymouth 277 V8 with 4 leaf springs. These are listed in the parts book for the 55-56 Plymouths, 6s and V8s, as the 1635 585 springs. Photo below.

Interesting (to me) is the "extra" U-bolt threads not used on this 4 leaf car. 5 Leaf there is less thread showing and 6 leaf there is almost no extra (exposed) threads. Provides a gauge for estimating the thickness of the stack. In this case, I would guess 1" (4 x 0.25")

BUT if you have a 56 Dodge Coronet 6 cylinder car, please feel free to post a photo of your car's rear springs.

More photos of the four leaf rear springs, these at the perch(es). 56 Belvedere (but presumably similar on a 56 Dodge with 6 cylinder engine - or Canadian Plodge)
