Just purchased and am chasing an overheating problem. Timing OK. No brake drag. Is there a special thermostat or anything unique about these 270 V8s???

Thank You.

Not really. The factory suggested either 160 F or 180 F thermostats. The original ones were a different design (wax-based cartridge) than what we use now (thermostatic spring and metal diaphragm) but you can use a "normal" 180 F thermostat from NAPA or O'Reilly's, etc.

The most likely potential issues will include:

1. Thermostat stuck closed (remove and replace)

2 Water pump impeller problems (you have to remove the radiator to remove the water pump. BTDT at least twice in 6 years.

3. Clogged radiator - you'll have it out when you are checking the water pump so have it checked at a radiator shop. I had mine recored.

4. Clogged coolant passages in the block and head. They make additives to help remove and flush that crap out.

5. ???

If you buy a thermostat check it in hot to almost boiling water with a thermometer to verify it opens and closes.

If it doesn't have a small hole or jiggle pin, I drill a 1/8" hole in the flat, inboard of the gasket surface, to help bleed the air when filling radiator.

It does not effect warm-up time, heat or cooling temps.

UGH!! Bad radiator. Core is plugged. Block was also suspect so got it flushed out. Passenger side was not too bad but took a while to get clean water through the driver's side. Will install GANO filter inline in top radiator hose when it all goes together.

Here's good info for all MOPAR owners. Glen-Ray radiator in Wausau WI is the place to go. When working on my '56 300B I was pulling the radiator out of the trunk and the owner said "Oh, 56 Chrysler". By the way, they will date code a Mopar radiator correctly and are licensed to do so. My all-star go to place for any radiator repair. Just a long drive for me.

All good.

The 331 hemi I put into my '56 Savoy was full of crud in the cooling system. I dissolved a small box of cascade dishwasher soap in a bucket and poured that into the motor with the radiator removed, no thermostat, and then connected the inlet & outlet hoses together. I ran the motor until it got hot, let it sit overnight, ran it again until hot, and then drained it. It was amazing how well that worked. What came out was a thick brown mess, so be sure to drain it appropriately. After filling with water, running it and draining, it looked 100% better and I haven't had any trouble with it afterward.

Also, most of the time, the old radiators have a lot of thermal resistance from the tubes to the fins, and the core just doesn't work very well anymore. So unfortunately, replacing either the core, or the whole radiator is often the only solution to solve an overheating problem.

Nathan, your proceeding is very efficient. But why did you removed the radiator? Would work as well only with removed thermostat?  - SERGE -

My radiator wasn't originally connected to the motor so it wasn't full of crud. Also, by loosening up all that crud, it wouldn't be a good idea to put it through your radiator if it was relatively clean.

I've used 5% acidity white vinegar to dissolve rust and lime deposits in cooling systems. Drain the cooling system enough to pour two gallons of vinegar in, and drive the car for a week or so. It really will remove a lot of stubborn rust and deposits on an older car.

Thanks for all the comments. Radiator clogged. Recore cost prohibitive at this time. Will be using aluminum radiator Recore of heater core in the works and will be using the Volvo valve when assembly starts. Thanks for all the good forum info and suggestions from members. All good and appreciated.
