Hi All,
Checking out a '56 Fury in 2 days, may have a bad fuel pump. Does the '56 303 use the same pump as a '57 318?

They seem to have different PNs but I would be surprised that they were significantly different, being from the same family tree and one year a part.

Rock Auto lists fuel pumps for the 1957 Fury 318 and the 313 but nothing for the 56 303

They are the same with only minor differences in the positioning of the inlet and outlet. As long as you are willing to make new lines, you won't have an issue. The older pumps can be taken apart and clocked to a new orientation as well.

I removed the fuel pump, the Fury had an AC 40332. A single bend on the pump arm whereas the 1957 and on small block pumps have 2 bends on the lever. Found a new pump for #1637367 online. Waiting for more pics.

Airtex is part of the company that owns Carter and Airtex doesn't exist anymore. The Airtex page showed part #4280 but Carter answered my call and the pump is obsolete. Next step is finding a pump rebuilder.

They're simple to rebuild.
I think Antique Parts Cellar or Then And Now is where I bought rebuild kits and they also rebuild the pumps.
I don't remember if those are the same companies since it's been a while since I've rebuilt one but somebody here knows the company I am talking about.

The tech guy at Carter mentioned Then and Now this morning.

Has anyone ever dealt with eCRATER? One of their sellers has a new pump that fits many Mopar V8s from '54 to '56, but I asked for more pics before I buy. It looks like an Airtex.

Finally found a re-manufactured fuel pump at Atlas Obsolete Motor Parts. As for Then and Now, they are not answering the phones or emails. Their voice mail says they are short of people.

So how badly is Atlas going to screw you for that fuel pump ? Then and Now sells their kits for around $50, IIRC. I would keep trying them, unless you have to get the car to Pebble Beach by this weekend and can't wait.

$250 plus shipping. I've never had any problems with Atlas, I've bought from them since 1998. The owner of the Fury is 80 years old and is selling the car, so it needs to run as soon as possible.

I was referring to how much they were (over)charging you for the fuel pump. Never said anything about having problems with them.

I would still give Then and Now a chance. I'd also rather rebuild the original pump, rather than using an aftermarket one from Atlas.

Aftermarket pump. Puts out too much pressure, which may cause flooding and wear on needle and seat. Correct Carter fuel pump puts out 7 lbs maximum.
