Can anyone help decode this? I know the basic codes, but there are many on here that I am not sure of. Also, I'm surprised that the first letter of the serial number isn't a "W", or at least doesn't appear to be.

Nathan: I don't think that the VIN got punched into the card. "W" is a 0 and 6 punched in the same column. I annotated all the punches and I cannot see the VIN, not the W or any of the VIN numbers in the correct order.

I can see most or almost all of the where the punches got translated to the printed part of the card.

That seems to be true for this 57 Chrysler card but it was not true in 1956 or in 1958 (example: Your 58 Chrysler):

Nathan,
What the engine does car have? I mean MOTOR CODE 042. Is that standard 354CID 2BBL or optional 354CID 4BBL with Dual Exhaust?

Thanks for all the codes. I didn't have know what many of those represented. I will try to get the engine info.
Region 08 looks to be Charlotte NC. I can't find the dealer.
Do you know what the code 569 would stand for?

The only "9" that Igor (frwl) has not accounted for above is the one above 359 "Insert moulding" (??)

Thanks for correction, Dave. Its really rear quarter panel color insert (according to the paint scheme, painted by Cloud White).

Nathan, you will be surprised but the code 569 you asked for also deciphering as INSERT MOLDING.
Look at the ’57 New Yorker build sheet I posted at the lower row. I have no idea what this insert is.

It is hard to read on the New Yorker card, but I would guess that 359 might be mean ROOF MOULDING;
The first word showing in slot is shorter than INSERT; it would be ROOF. It might be roof rail drip molding or wider side roof moulding, like on the 1957 Desotos have; while 569 is an insert color. But this is my guessing only. What do you think?

Disagree. I played with the image and while the quality is very poor, I think that the New Yorker card also has the words "INSERT MOULDING" under the 359 numbers.

The 359 code isn't punched, but the 569 code is. I suspect that the real code is 569, but was listed under 369 just because the 500 series wasn't listed out on the card. Otherwise, they would have also punched the 359 location. But it's odd that they have them both listed as the same thing.

I confirmed that the motor is a 2bbl single exhaust. So code 042 should indicate that. Igor, I disagree with your statement on the Body Number. Usually they start the counting at 1001, not 10,001. But I'm also not sure if this number is just the Model 146 bodies. I don't think they made that many, so I'm not sure what it is counting.

By the way, this isn't one of my cars. I've been too lazy to get the IBM cards for my cars, though I should on many of them.

You may be right about 1001 instead 10001.
But, they have built 14027 Windsor 2 Door Hardtops in 1957,
So, if this car was built on February, the body number 9013th might be makes sense…

Thanks for confirming the “042” motor code!
Now, the next questions:
What would be coded the Saratoga (or same Windsor 4bbl) engine?
What the “260” New Yorker motor code is decipher on the ’57 NY build sheet I have posted?

I think the first digit decipher the displacement, second – the carburetor (2 or 4bbl), and the last something else…

Nathan: I think:

1. Danielle is back at Stellantis Historical.
2. All you can get from them (her) is a pdf image of the car's IBM card
3. They aren't charging for the pdf
4. You still need some form of official proof of ownership, e.g. registration (scan)

Thanks Dave.

Igor, my Black/White '57 Windsor 2dr coupe disproves your theory. It has body number 05516 with a build date of 11/21/1956 and has the same 146 2dr body type. So the count can't start at 10,001. But, as you see, they didn't make over 19K Windsor 2dr coupes either. At first, I thought they would count all 2dr hardtop bodies together, as that would make a lot of sense. But I decided to plot out all the body numbers and their corresponding build dates to see if that were true. Since I have data on 4 cars that were all built on the same exact date, it is clear that the Windsor 2dr hardtops are not counted with the New Yorkers. Also, it is clear that the 300C bodies are counted with the 2dr hardtop New Yorker bodies. I don't know if it includes the 4dr New Yorkers as well. But it looks like it probably does as the last 42677 Windsor 4dr sedan body seems to be a count of all 1957 Windsors, no matter which body type. If you have more data on Saratogas and 4dr sedans, I encourage you to plot them out in a similar fashion.

To make the days from the build date, I assumed that build started Sept. 01, and that each month has 30 days. It isn't exact, but close enough.

I got information from the owner that the dealer was:
Walker-Darden Motors in Plymouth, North Carolina.
This ad insert was the only information I could find on them.
So this dealer should correspond to dealer no. 5497
