Hi all,
Somone who knows i rebuild old mopar transmissions gave me a Powerflte (from a Facel Vega !) which has problems, slippage etc... The transmission was rebuilt by "a specialist" in transmissions ... The car drove 5 or 10 miles then couldn't move ...
I found a lot of craps in the oil pan, so i immediatly thought that clutches are shot. This was confirmed when i opened the clutches housing. Steels plates were blue also !
My inquiry is about rebuilt. I know well the Torqueflite but not the Powerflite... When you rebuild a clutches pack on Torqueflite you must check the clearance and there is a method with a clutch retainer plate to check the gap. You can adjust in using thicker or thinner friction plates.

But i can't find something on Powerflite ! I just find this in the FSM
"Using a feeler gauge, check
clearance under the kickdown sun gear snap
ring. Select a snap ring to give minimum clear-
ance (close to zero as possible). Make sure
snap ring seats properly. Snap rings are avail-
able in following three thicknesses: .059- to .061,
.062 to .064, .065 to .067 inch."

Mine is .059. So i must order the two others in case ?

Sun gear clearance should not affect clutch slippage. What is the clutch clearance on the forward clutch, measure to the snap ring. How is reverse?

I haven't measure it. I'll do when i rebuild with new clutches. What would be the desired value ?

How is reverse?

According to the owner, no reverse or direct ....

If no reverse that is usually a pressure issue, clutch pack end clearance is in the shop manual, loaned mine out.

I have 3 manuals, I read them all the way through, I couldn't find any information on clutch clearance.
Could too low a pressure have prevented the clutch from engaging sufficiently and therefore being destroyed?

Yes, especially if someone raced the engine while it was slipping. Clutch clearance is about the same as a torqueflite. .080 is about right. Between the snap ring ring and the clutch plate.

In my younger days on the bench I overhauled 100's of Powerflite trannys. While you have that chunk of cast iron on the bench I would suggest you also check the torque converter. You mentioned there was crud in the pan. There will be a bunch in the converter also. If it is a bolt together converter it is easy to disassemble and clean. One big o ring seal to replace. If a one piece converter then it is a bit harder to clean them out. Good Luck. Check out Chrysler Master Tech videos on YouTube.
I do not remember 60 years back on the clearance check.

The converter wiil be replaced with another one. The guy told me that there was a whining sound which changes with the rpm of the engine before the trans went out.
Some pics of the inside .... The car has been driven only 10 or 15 miles with a new overhauled transmission before ...................

Boy Phil what a mess, convertor and cooler must have debris if not flushed when redone. Possible the screen in the pan is clogged again.
