Location: Finland | If neutral switch is broken, what happen? Do car lost ignition spark or what?? Yesterday we visit on local meeting, everything works nicely, but when we try to leave home car doesn't start at all. Car spins motor well, gasoline/carburator is ok ... but not even try to start. I don't had tools to check spark, so I just think that was missing. Earlier I had couple times problems when car's motor was cold, it went out without warning. But started without problems immediately.

Location: So. Cal | That's correct, it will turn, but the neutral start switch will kill the ignition circuit to prevent it from starting. Also check to make sure that the car is actually in neutral. Twice, I've done extensive trouble shooting to figure out what the problem was, only to find that I neglected to put the car in neutral before starting. |

Location: NorCal | The Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) has nothing to do with the ignition, if the starter engages and turns the engine over, the NSS isn't the problem. |

Location: Finland |
Yesterday car was brought back to garage with truck.

Today after work i went to garage, and car started without any delays or other problems. It's difficult to find reason for starting issue, because there's no any clear reason (Weather, warm-/cold engine etc.)

It's quite frustrating when you don't know when the problem is repeated, normally it happens just the wrong time and in the wrong place.

Remember that there are two neutral switches.
One is the Neutral safety switch on the driver's side of the transmission. It prevents starting in any other gear.
The other one is the Neutral Starting Switch that stops restarting if the engine is running. If it fails it could stop a start of non-running engine.
I have posted about both, with wiring diagrams. Search "neutral switch" with my user name for more info.

Location: So. Cal | Chizler is correct. I wasn't thinking about it correctly. The neutral safety switch cuts out the "start" line from the ignition switch to the starter relay.
The second switch Dave is talking about doesn't exist on a DeSoto, and when it is used, they don't use second one, as you are guaranteed to be in Neutral, because that's the button you have to push to engage the starter. |

I'm running both on my 56 Dodge, and will soon have the Neutral start button hooked up.
