There are three large cables in play here.

1. The negative ground cable from the battery to the block (probably near the left bank head)
2. The positive cable from the battery to input side of the starter solenoid on the inner fender
3. The starter cable from the starter solenoid to the starter.

As for size (diameter/gauge), I think the general answer is bigger is better but colour is important too (in my opinion)

I like the ground and starter cables in black. I am running the OE ground cable but I had a 1/0 gauge starter cable made up for $16.

As for the positive cable, I chose a pre-made 2 gauge red one from NAPA (which happened to have a 12 gauge fused link that I used to power my electric choke (via a second solenoid))

For a 12V system, 4ga should be fine. Anything more is overkill. Napa should be able to set you up with the correct length. And yes, go with black. The red cables look out of place on a car of our era.

Most new cars use 4 gauge but they have gear-reduction starters. For straight-drive starters, I would stay with 2 gauge.

On cars with heat sink problems, I usually use 0 AWG.
