I'm attempting to adjust the low/reverse band in my '58 Fireflite with a '57 Chrysler transmission in it. The FSM has a cryptic statement in it about "because you're using the extension on your torque wrench, adjust the torque to 47-50 inch-pounds." Any idea how that would translate into the modern world without this special extension? Also, it likely doesn't matter because I can't fit a socket wrench on the transmission without lowering it down. Is adjusting it until it just tightens up with a small 5/16" open ended wrench good enough, and then back out to 2 5/8 rotations?

The true value is 70-75 inch pounds without extension. The purpose is to properly align the band and take out all the slack.

Thanks. That value is what I was looking for because without the length of the extension that they are referring to, it's impossible to know. I'll use a torque wrench to tighten a nut to 75 inch pounds and use my small 5/16" wrench to loosen it to get a feel for what that amount feels like. Then I'll tighten it back and check the value with the torque wrench again to essentially calibrate my hand so I don't have to lower the trans down.

I made a special short socket and use a 1/4 torquewrench. Works nicely even though the limited space. Of course it can be done by hand as well.
