My 1959 dodge 383 heat riser conterweight fell off on first start of the engine this year.. I Need help with a diagram visual of all the components and how it is assembled. I might be missing a part or two. Thanks ! This is a kit similar to what came off . it says it's for a dodge truck . without a diagram of how to assemble it I'm stumped. Thanks again !

Hint: when arc welding the new valve to the shaft, clamp the ground to the shaft not the manifold...this prevents the shaft from being fused to the manifold.

I understand only the counterweight fell off? The OE shaft is stainless steel and I wouldn't touch it.

There is a self exlanatory pic in the shop manual. If you don't have one I can post one, let me know. It is pretty simple but it can be a little bit tricky to adjust it with pipe attached to the manifold, as you can't see the position of the valve (plate).

There is an important but easily fabricated piece missing in your kit. The little lock plate that keeps the weight from turning on the shaft.
You adjust the position of the valve in the closed position (important) by bending the stainless steel cushioned strap, the piece under the plate in your picture and it goes inward.

I forgot, I'm glad to see someone restoring/maintaining this important piece of every carbureted engine!

Yes the Butterfly in the manifold is all intact . I think what happened is the Nut came loose on the tiny bolt and fell off, it must not of been tightened enough . I will post a pic of what fell off .

That first pic I posted was just a pic to show parts what is similar to I have on the manifold

<p>Well I got it put back together. Only thing that seems different is that when I start the car, the counterweight shakes when the engine is just starting to warm up , after a few minutes the counterweight starts to open in the down position and it all good then with no wiggling. I never use to shake like that when it was just starting to warm up. Maybe I have to bend that silencer tab ? maybe not . Sorry I could not load any pics of it .</p>

Here is a kit for a left manifold used on the ram cars. You can see the little lock plate mentioned above below the two bushings. Also is an illustration from one of the service bulletins about revised thermostatic spring.

My Lock is a little different than yours but works either way and I don't know if there is a tiny spring on the backside by the butterfly shaft . I will look and see when I jack the car up on stands.

It is possible that the butterfly isn't in exactly the 3/9 O clock postion or that the heat riser spring is too weak. The spring on the backside is the anti-rattle spring and if its stiff enough, it dampens the shaking of the counterweight too. Use a stainless steel spring.

When the engine runs for a few minutes the weight begins to turn clockwise and then opens the butterfly counterweight fully in the down position.. Seams to working correctly. the weight just wiggles back and forth when engine is just fired up for a few minutes. I still have to see if there is a spring on the backside. some don't .

Even if the butterfly is a few degrees off it will open the way it should. A wiggling is entirely normal due to the exhaust pulses, hence the anti-rattle spring and the chushioned rebound "bumper" (strap).

Yes, the wiggle is the pulse of the exhaust pressure ways . normal.

Here 2 pictures from my old manifold, that I replaced with tube headers. No cushion on the rebound bumper but worked perfectly silent.

That is the anti rattle spring

It is not visible from the engine bay and mostly gone, so some people think heat risers are always noisy. OE they were for some reason not stainless. Replace it with a stainless steel spring and it will last forever. The one in picture worked for 20+ years.
