I am inching towards a front disc brake conversion for my 56 Dodge D500. So far, I have compared AAJ and Scarebird brackets. I am leaning towards the Scarebird brackets which use 1990 Chevy Celebrity "HD" (presumably V6) front calipers. I have had a set of those in my hand at our local friendly auto parts store ("FLAPS") (called Lordco, think O'Reilly) and they do fit in the Scarebird brackets. However, I wasn't thrilled by the price that I was offered (plus a core charge) so I passed on buying them right then until I could check out the alternatives. In this case, the alternatives are Rock Auto, PartsAvatar.ca (a Canadian "version" of Rock Auto) and Lordco. Using a common supplier, Cardone, as an example, I put together a little spreadsheet to compare the prices. Looks like Rock Auto could win and/or make an "upgrade" from Cardone to AC Delco not too much of a leap.

And then there are these loaded, slightly larger calipers, (from Scarebird):

https://scarebird.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=96&produc...

Gotta make a decision soon. Spring will soon be here.

(This info and the bracket thread would apply to any non-estate wagon 56 Chrysler or Desoto as well)

Don't know about *always* but they definitely won this one. (Sorry Canadian suppliers) I found out that Rock Auto also had power-coated Celebrity calipers as well for about the same price. I used the Rock Auto Discount code (for 5% off the item cost) that was posted by Rock Auto here, in the Forward Look Vendor section, and have ended up paying less that I determined yesterday for non-power-coated calipers.

These:

Rock Auto always nails you on shipping if they have what you need available. Which they rarely do. I'd rather just buy from Amazon.

Amazon doesn't tell you much (anything?) about the item whereas Rock Auto has lots of info to help me make a decision, e.g. piston size.

That said, for fun, I just checked Amazon. They list the non-powder coated Cardone 18-4194 and -4195 for about $46 each plus free shipping. So in the $92 range. Less than Rock Auto. But no powder coating.

https://www.amazon.ca/Cardone-18-4194-Remanufactured-Friction-Unload...

The Powder coated 18-P4194 is listed by Amazon at $126.54 each, more than twice what I am paying and more than what I am paying for two calipers. Amazon does not list the other side 18-P4195. So I think I made the correct decision.

The time spent to comparison shop is not worth it. I've been burned by Rock Auto so many times on shipping that I don't buy from them. I may order 2 calipers, but they ship from 2 different warehouses and stick you for 2 shipping charges. Plus they carry almost nothing at all for Forward Look cars. Meanwhile, I can have my parts thrown in with my other orders from Amazon and get them sooner than I really need them.

I'm done with Rock Auto. They are crooks in my opinion with their underhanded shipping charges. That 5% discount does not make them competitive in my mind. They may sponsor this site, but they are scumbags to deal with.

My only beef with them is if you happen to tell them that you weren't going to use the part on its original application, that they will void any warranty. The only real issue I've had with them was I purchased calipers that had helicoils in the bleeders. Couldn't get those bleeders to seal, and had to send them back.

Well, say what you want about Rock Auto but so far (and this is not the only time), I am happy with my order. Ordered on Monday afternoon, March 14th and delivered this afternoon, March 17. No customs hassles, no "random" PCR test kits at the border, just opening my front door to the Fedex delivery person and saying "Thanks".

Looks like the calipers should work for my 56 Dodge D500 but they might not work for a 56 Chrysler or Desoto because of the angle of the steering arm.

I like the power coating so bonus for me.

(And yes, I know I have the wrong caliper on the bracket (the bleeder isn't on the top)). Torx T50 bolts for the sliders BTW.)

Those look like they are not coated. I agree with Dave, that having a gray powdercoat on them is a very nice feature.

I order a lot from Rockauto for my 59 Chrysler and daily drivers. IF I can wait for shipping. I try to order other things from the same warehouse to make the shipping worth it. Most of the time shipping+price is still cheaper than me running to Autozone or O'Reilly's. We don't have NAPA down here and Bumper to Bumper or AdvancedAuto are far and few in between.

I would also pay the premium for powdercoated especially if they are visible from outside the car.

Rockauto is still my preferred goto... I will check Ebay sometimes to see if someone has one and I know I wont ever need to return.

What sucks is when you have to split shipping on Rockauto... the shipping gets crazy when you have multiple warehouses... i think the compute is jacked.

I just pulled the trigger on the Scarebird kit for my 58 2 minutes ago! Thanks for all the legwork on the celebrity calipers! I was literally sitting down to start tracking down the parts!
