Still gathering replacement parts for a car I don't have here yet (at my dad's 1400 miles away and his eyes arent that good).. Anyway what is the general length of the starter cable #4 wire - from the relay in the fender to the starter? I have a 36" one but will that be too long?

This is a 56 Windsor which has a 331/354 Hemi (solenoid on the starter.) The cable on there now is burnt up for some reason.. I did get a spare starter though just in case.

Can't give you a direct answer but longer is better than not long enough.

In my case (56 Dodge), I had a starter issue that I thought might be solved with a bigger starter cable from the external solenoid on the fender liner to the starter (with no external solenoid). I took my car to a battery shop where one of the techs and I messed around figuring out the cable length. In the bright light of day (gorgeously sunny fall day here), I could actually see the end of the starter from above. He used a measure tape from above and I guided the one end at the starter (laying on the ground). We figured 25" (635 mm or so). (BUT remember a Dodge is a bit smaller than a Chrysler).

He made me the new starter cable right there and then. Used AWG 1/0 (50 mm^2) CCI Royal/Excelene 600V welding cable (made in the USA) and two AWG 2/0 eyelet lug terminal ends pre-positioned to eliminate twists during install. Professionally double crimped. We have West Coast (BC) term for that: "Skookum" (very strong). Cost me $16 plus taxes. Deal.

Well that's an idea. Thanks!!
I bought a #4 36" line at Tractor Supply who hasnt yet updated their prices for only $16!! But then I was thinking it may be too long. With high current lines you dont want to have to kink it or have it bump the exhaust so I thought I'd better check. It's the one item I didn't want to have my dad drive back out where the car sits just to look at that in the dark where he can't see too well anyway.. But if it's that short too I can always cut and re-crimp on a terminal..
On your Dodge isn't the solenoid nearer to the firewall anyway? That may be the difference. Havent seen one for a long time..

By the way at Tractor Supply I saw a Group 24 battery for just around $100 when everywhere else they were near $150 at the least around here..

Still checking - I head down in April to rescue this car. Want to make sure the cable isn't too long to get burnt up on the exhaust, etc.. Also if anyone has a aftermarket starter for sale I may be interested in that too. Need spares.

If you are looking for an aftermarket starter, you can get one through Hot Heads for $290. https://hothemiheads.com/transmission_adapters/starter_replacement.h...
You can also get one through IMI starters in Whittier for a little less. http://hitorque.com (not listed on their site, you have to call them)

Thanks! That's what I was hoping. What I have will work then w/o any further modifications.
